J.-C. la société juive réagissait d’une manière diverse. Sur le plan politique une partie de l’élite juive s’adaptait aux conditions nouvelles tandis que quelques Hasmonéens essayaient de se libérer de la domination romaine par plusieurs révoltes qui semblent s’être appuyées principalement sur la population rurale. Au plan idéologique, plusieurs auteurs apocryphes tentent d’intégrer ces événements catastrophiques dans une vision du monde déterminée par la religion en vue de les harmoniser avec le dessein des dieux pour les hommes.
