Selon une tradition reproduite par Plutarque dans sa Vie de Cléomène (11, 4), il est à lier avec le système éducatif créé par Sphairos le Borysthénien pour les neoi. Les rois Agis et Cléomène ont eu à composer avec les autorités de leur cité et la menace de stasis. Ils voulurent augmenter le corps civique par une anaplèrôsis. Dans un contexte difficile, l’ agôgè est un moyen de former les neoi et d’intégrer les nouveaux citoyens dans le même « Spartan way of life ». C’est une garantie donnée par les rois Agis et Cléomène pour prouver qu’ils respectent la politeia de Lycurgue. Ils ne sont pas des tyrans. | ||
