Cette recherche se concentre sur les décennies qui ont précédé la création du ghetto. Dès le début du xviie siècle, en effet, il y eut à Modène, des cycles de prédications de la part des frères franciscains, surtout des capucins, qui fomentaient le sentiment anti-juif de la population. La création du ghetto fut également au centre d’un conflit politique entre la magistrature municipale et le pouvoir ducal qui, après 1598, fut contraint de s’installer à Modène après la perte de l’ancienne capitale, Ferrare. Si dans un premier temps la municipalité, qui entendait réaffirmer son pouvoir sur l’espace urbain, avait souhaité instituer le ghetto, ce fut plutôt le duc qui, dans les années 1630, insista pour qu’il fût créé dans le cadre d’un processus de réinvestissement de l’espace urbain comme capitale de l’État.
520			_aBirth of a ghetto; Authorities and religious intolerance in the Duchy of Este (1602-1638) This article examines the context of the institution of the ghetto of Modena, the first to be established in the Duchy of Este in 1638. The study focuses on the decades that preceded the foundation of the ghetto. From the beginning of the seventeenth century in Modena, there were cycles of preaching by Franciscan friars, especially Capuchins, who fomented the population’s anti-Jewish feeling. The creation of the ghetto was also at the center of a political dispute between the municipal magistrature and the ducal power which, after 1598, was forced to move to Modena after the loss of the former capital Ferrara. While the City Council, which intended to reaffirm its power over the urban area, initially wanted the ghetto, it was the Duke in the 1630s who insisted on its creation as part of a process to reestablish the city space as state capital.
