520			_aJacques Le Brun appartient à une génération d’historiens du catholicisme qui a déplacé l’intérêt de l’histoire de l’Église, ou de l’histoire des doctrines, à une histoire des croyances. Il l’a fait en privilégiant les écrits spirituels, y compris et d’abord ceux de grands auteurs : Bossuet, Fénelon. Dans les objets que se donne ainsi l’histoire religieuse, tel le « pur amour » durant la querelle du quiétisme, il a découvert un « impossible à penser » – la discipline historique rencontrant un questionnement d’ordre anthropologique et le travail exégétique s’enrichissant d’une attention à la lettre d’ordre psychanalytique.

He did so by prioritising spiritual writings, including, first and foremost, two great authors: Bossuet and Fénelon. In the topics that religious history had given itself, such as “pure love” during the quarrel of Quietism, he discovered an “impossible to think”—the discipline of history meeting anthropological questioning, and exegetical work being enriched by paying close attention to psychoanalytic inspiration.
