520 _aThe analysis of the functions and uses of the prytaneia of Priene and Magnesia of the Maeander shows that they were built in the last decades of the third century bc to be the houses of the civic community, in which the common hearth of the city was kept, as well as places for honorary receptions. These prytaneia were also used as a repository for archives and as permanent headquarters for magistrates of the Council and the Assembly. The activities hosted in these buildings thus placed them at the heart of the tension in Hellenistic politics between the citizens’ individual aspirations and the expression of the civic collective.
