520 _aThis article deals with an iconic figure in children’s literature: the Countess of Ségur (1799-1874), whose career began at the age of 56, in the context of the French Second Empire hostile to women’s artistic production. At the crossroads of the sociology of literature and gender studies, this article aims to understand the symbolic and material dimensions of the Countess writing practices. This article reveals the structural obstacles encountered by the Countess as well as how she subjectively addressed them. From this case study, the article analyzes the social determinants of a female destiny in literature.
