520 _aThe life of the composer Robert Schumann allows us to question the function of creation. Several elements and symptoms suggest that we are dealing with a manic-depressive psychosis: depressive mood, lack of interest toward the outside world, self-reproach, thoughts about death, hallucinations, as well as a specific body image. Schumann invents, not just one solution, but many solutions to compensate the foreclosure of the Name-of-the-Father. In effect, we can hypothesize that his hand-paralysis is a substitution, a treatment of the “real” by “reality.” He also uses imaginary identifications, his masters, and his partner, Clara. These substitutions seem to help him to make a sinthome of his musical creation. However, at a certain point, these subjective solutions no longer hold sway. The emergence of a real through the encounter of “Un-père” and his appointment to the position of musical director seem to shed some light on the triggering of psychosis.
