520 _aThe main goal of this study is to determine the effects of maternal anxiety on the social development of the child, particularly on its social competence. Data were gathered from 312 mothers with children in kindergarten. Two scales have been used: the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale (MSAS—Hock, McBride, and Gneza, 1989) and the Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation Scale (SCBE— LaFreniere and Dumas, 1996). Results show that maternal anxiety results in lower social competence, especially for boys.
