520 _aThis article analyzes the many studies by Italian critics (from the last decade of the twentieth century until the present) that deal with the narrative genre of the Grand Siècle and its poetics. Given the extent of this argument, two criteria have been adopted to deal with it: an articulation in temporal phases (bringing together, in the first instance, studies of the Baroque period and subsequently those that treat of the genre in the Classical period); a second articulation takes stock of the numerous subgenres characteristic of narrative technique (systematically examining studies involving the epic, the novel—with its different forms—, the short story—its different modes—, and the fairy tale). In all of these domains, critics in Italy have offered approaches that are often original and nearly always noteworthy.
