520 _aThis article presents an analysis of new forms of urban habitat stemming from the creation of closed parcels of land in medium-sized towns in the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil. These arrangements modify the town’s structure and redefine centre-periphery relations; moreover, they engender practices of socio-spatial segregation and urban fragmentation. The analytical basis for this study has focussed on the new urban morphologies, relations between the individual and the collective and between these urban parcels and the town.
