520 _aThe social function, architectural form, and internal organization of prisons impose an exceptional residential experience on those who are forced to live in them. In this article, we focus on the cell space and examine the modalities of its domestication by inmates. We show first that despite the architectural and regulatory constraints and the lack of privacy, prisoners succeed in appropriating this space. While similar practices are found in most cells, we also find that this appropriation varies according to the social characteristics and the residential past of inmates.
