520 _aDrawing on observations, interviews and archival research, this article explores the spatial resources of protest movements based on the case of the Yellow Vests (Gilets jaunes) demonstrations in Toulouse. These resources are understood both in terms of the spatial practices of protest but also in symbolic terms. The argument advanced is that the protests in the centre of Toulouse reflect a spatial contradiction between the lack of physical and symbolic places where working-class meetings, dialogue and political development can take place, and commercial hegemony over this central area. This demonstrates the establishment of a continuum of police practice which increases working-class dispersal and prevents working-class people engaging politically with the city as thinking and acting subjects.
