520 _aThe article aims at apprehending highschool students’ attitudes vis-à-vis secular values spread by school and the reappropriation of national, secular and religious values. The fieldwork undertaken in 1996 with students from three public schools helps unterstand the identity contruction process as seen taken through the use of symbols like the pin of Atatürk and the headscarf. The discrepancy between collectivist school system and youth’s new individualist values appears as being the significant reason of the construction of subject out of the school. One can see thus the redefinition of concepts like secularism, Islam and modernity as a consequence of this rupture. Ten years after our fieldwork, we can better undestand the transformation of kemalist secularism and Islamism in the contemporary Turkish society.
