520 _aFor boys and girls alike, first sexual intercourse is a significant emotional experience. This is clearly demonstrated in written accounts collected from college students in response to a narrative inquiry. The instruction : “ Please relate the experience of the first time you had sex” made no mention or even suggestion of “parents”, and yet more than half of the narratives, particularly those provided by girls, involved the mother or the father, and sometimes both parents. Based on a secondary analysis of the narratives in which parents were mentioned, this article explores the reasons behind the appearance of these unexpected guests.
