520 _a‪Drawing on hitherto unexplored archives, this article shows how Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991) built his academic career in the 1940s and 1950s. In particular, it traces how the sociologist tried to develop his expertise and gain authority in rural sociology. By discussing Lefebvre’s theoretical positions and analysing his academic trajectory, it examines both processes of legitimisation – joining the Centre d’études sociologiques, dedicating his research to rural sociology, defending his doctoral thesis – and the difficulties the sociologist encountered to gain recognition.‪
