520			_aIndustrial Ecology (IE) aims at minimizing energy and material flows in industrial processes. Initially, IE was thought of as an analogy between industrial and natural systems. In the latter, energy and material flows are recycled so that the system tends to become self-sufficient. However, IE synergies are not limited to inter-company flows. Rather, they may be undertaken on a larger scale, namely that of the territory. The challenges are then different, especially in terms of sustainable development since IE promotes more sustainable forms of development in industrial parks and territories. Evaluation tools for sustainable development applied to local IE projects is suggested. These are created in order to guide the decision-making process but may also be used in a more general manner to assess territorial approaches to sustainable development. First, the general feasibility of an IE experiment is tested using a logical pattern of project organization that takes into account the different dimensions of IE (technical, economic, environmental, and risk). Second, indicators are classified into four themes: material and energy flows, functioning mode in the industrial area in question, environmental integration, and territorial development. Some indicators refer to the corporate scale, while others imply a larger scope. Users eventually choose among those indicators depending on the objectives of collective action, all stakeholders in the project preferably constructing a set of indicators jointly.
