520 _aNew dynamics of interconnection between urban and rural territories are ongoing. They structure many social science studies on the re-territorialization of agri-food systems, the ecosystem services provided by the peri-urban fringe, and governance innovations in the relationship between rural and urban spaces. Beyond the simple characterization of a new paradigm for the relationship between urban and rural territories, this special issue presents the implementation of these interconnections. Our approach is focused on social and organizational innovations studied in the framework of empirical research codesigned with territorial partners in several French regions over the past five years. The knowledge produced by the partnership research illustrates the diversity of skills that must be mobilized to grasp the various dimensions of regional development issues. It is this systemic dimension of territorial issues that poses a challenge for research and for public policies.
