520 _aIn 1914, the agents of the SR possessed equipment largely inherited from past centuries. The conflict necessitated the introduction of cutting-edge equipment but without removing those that proved their accuracy. The fracture took place with the War of Position because it made crossing the front lines or borders more and more difficult. Consequently, the spies of the SR and SCR were endowed with varied and specific equipment which improved their discretion while helping them to fool the enemy. False papers, disguises, forged objects, cameras, and telegraphic apparatus allowed them to fulfill their mission more easily, but inevitably signed their death sentence in case of discovery by German counter-intelligence.
