520 _aFor the past ten years, research on patriots in the First World War has helped to better understand this initial phenomenon of resistance. Little is known, however, about what they experienced in prison. These men had forgotten about daily violence. With this in mind, this article examines the violence suffered by imprisoned patriots and how they perceived and interpreted it. This case is all the more interesting in that it fits into the context of total war in which violence was aimed not only at soldiers but also at civilians.
