520 _aThe revendication, which would separate the French county Pyrénées-Atlantiques in two with the Basque county on one side and the Béarn county on the other, creates an issue. On one hand, the Basque county has a nationalist demand for a territory that would include four Spanish provinces and the French Basque county as it would be if it were a county of its own. On the other hand, Bayonne would be the main administrative office of the Basque county, which was in the past part of the Gascon linguistic and cultural circle. This issue of local historic identity is today reminded by those who object to making Bayonne a town mostly Basque. This opposition shows how the relation between local identities and political territories could be established in the future in France.
