520 _aDuring the Oslo process in the nineties, many observers suggested the adherence of Israel to the European Union, in parallel with the creation of a Palestinian state in peace with the state of Israel. Israeli public opinion, as well as the political representatives, never demonstrated a keen interest towards this perspective, especially due to its attachment to sovereignty and its independence in strategy. With the start of the second Intifada in 2000, followed by the enduring return to power of Ariel Sharon’s government, Israel is less than ever interested by this idea. The intensity of such debate remains extremely low, at least for now.
