520 _aFar from a consensus on the significance to be given to the life of John Paul II, the French press offered a very varied range of covering. The different editorial policies and political opinions of the newspapers can be clearly identified and they go from admiration (accompanied by many testimonies and homages) to criticism and denunciation of conservatism. Even the last days of the Pope do not give place to an identical treatment. However, the iconographic choices illustrating the assessment of his life let appear a certain agreement on the main aspects of his pontificate, even if the judgements put forward on the “John Paul II generation” are very divergent.
