520 _aDuring early modern time the flax seeds from the Baltic countries are considered as high quality seed and becomes indispensable to the Western European agriculture. Brittany is one of the major provinces of textile manufacturers in France and this region imports big quantities of seed from the port of Libau in Kurland. The Breton imports are totally controlled by the merchants from the port of Lübeck thus making comfortable profits. The high price for seeds is one of the reasons which explains the decline in the production of Breton textile in the 17th century.
