520 _aA brawl which took place among harvesters in Bourbonnais in 1697 allows us to recapture the musical practices of the local rural societies. These sources also offer a way to develop the methodology needed to locate the indications they contain on these cultural practices, which so far have not been seen as worthwhile topics of research. Lastly, this particular incident brings to light the intricate relationship between on one hand the largely urban structuration of music in the 17th century, the so-called "Ménéstrandise", and rural societies on the other, with some glimpses of the extent of the diffusion of the former.
