520			_aThe psychological difficulties of physicians are no longer ignored today. Studies in France and internationally have revealed high rates of suicide within the professional medical population, comparatively higher than in the general population. The prevalence of doctors in a state of burnout is worrying. Our study, conducted in the Spring of 2014 among hospital psychiatrists, attempted to understand the origins of this suffering, based on a questionnaire to which 840 psychiatrists responded. The results showed the presence of several environmental factors that could have contributed to the onset of distress at work: excessive stress, considerable time pressure, conflict between professional and private life, the burden of administration and administrative work, increasing demands made by patients, etc. Women psychiatrists were generally the worst affected. The study also revealed a feeling of present or past burnout shared by nearly 7 out of 10 psychiatrists, and greater antidepressant consumption than in the general population. Despite these results, more than 6 out of 10 psychiatrists expressed satisfaction with their employment situation. Despite significant progress made in the prevention of workplace suffering, doctors, including psychiatrists, are very much affected by this problem. In an era of decline in the numbers of medical professionals, mutual support among doctors is more essential than ever.
