520 _aThe use and creation of emoticons in China are linked not only to the latest events but also to traditional Chinese culture. Emoticons as a whole (emoticons, smileys, and emojis) are part of the communication dynamic brought about by the evolution of digital practices. They allow speakers, very quickly, to express their emotions and subjectivity. To economize in their language use, Chinese internet users employ either typographic emoticons largely inspired by manga and 2D animations, or highly polysemic iconographic emoticons, to express various emotions with great humor and irony.
