520 _aTo preach is not so much to make something as to uncover oneself, as if in the sun. This in itself, though initially agreeable, can cause redness if not actual sunburn! Preachers help others take this risky step only after having been through it themselves. Those who are familiar with the biblical text should not be content with explaining it or applying it to everyday life but should aim to bring it to life once again. The alien quality of the Bible is not to be domesticated, for it carries the potential to cause an unexpected encounter with God. In order to achieve this, carefully thought-out words for every group of listeners require critical exegesis as well as confident faith. The goal of a sermon is not success but the right word, individual and communal, allowing listeners to attune their questions and their lives to those whose voices echo through the Scriptures.
