520 _aChile is known for its family catechesis. This article presents that form of catechesis not only through its history but also in its contextual and theological dynamics. In the first part, the authors call to mind some ideas of the Second Vatican Council that had a direct impact on the renewal of catechesis in Latin America; in the second part, they give a brief overview of the Latin American bishops’ conferences from the perspective of their contribution to catechetical reflection. The third part is devoted to the main landmarks of family catechesis, starting from the model of “catechist mothers” down to its current form. Lastly, a few of the limitations of this type of catechesis are discussed, as well as its contributions to the Church and to community life.
