520 _aThis article analyses the discourse on Ukraine in the journal Kontinent, founded in Paris in 1974 by Russian and East European dissidents. As the first Russian-language émigré publication to explicitly defend Ukrainian independence, it was one of the platforms for dialogue between Russian and Ukrainian émigrés and helped to initiate a change of mindset on the Ukrainian question within the Russian émigré community and the Soviet Union.
