They play an irreplaceable role in the selection of political elites through the screening of potential candidates. Their electoral role and their function as expression of collective will is guaranteed by the law. Thus, the existence of parties is protected in the name of freedom of association and expression in a democratic society. Yet, political parties are criticized by the public, and these criticisms are traditional, more or less present in all countries, and to a large extent of a structural nature.
