520 _aClinicians are concerned with the welfare and development of the child. Is it conceivable for them to allow a child to remain with an abusive and psychotic parent? Some professionals are inclined to privilege the filial tie, whereas others believe that the child is not there to treat the parent, especially when he/she is being mistreated by that parent. Based on clinical cases, this paper proposes a set of criteria that may help clinicians to determine when it is best to remove the child from the presence of a parent. Four areas are discussed: the child, the adult, the quality of their relationship, and the socio-family environment.
