520 _aApplying Law’s heterogeneous engineering concept to empirical data on engineers in Portugal, this mixed-methods study concludes that sociotechnical interaction plays an important part in the everyday practice of engineers. In particular, the data suggest that a central part of engineers’ practice involves finding workable solutions by coordinating information and people in technical contexts. The authors suggest that the preparation of future engineers requires going beyond the traditional engineering science approach so as to develop the sociotechnical competences required for them to be effective technical coordinators.
