520 _aThe usage of a vaccine requires an ethical discernment regarding the conditions in which it is produced, the ways in which it is used, and the tension between respect for individual liberties and the promotion of the common good. Sometimes, one must evaluate the degree of responsibility in cooperating with evil and the appropriateness of manipulating living organisms, and offer judgments based on principles of proportionality. It is always a question of preserving the necessary adaptability of living beings in the face of danger, as a gift of Creation that reinforces the duty to evaluate the limits that must be imposed on technology. Finally, it is necessary to promote justice in the access to vaccines by giving priority to the most vulnerable and recognising the common good which calls for collaboration and concrete action on the part of every citizen, from institutions including the Church, all the way to the economic and geopolitical level.
