Over the past forty years, the Republican Party has developed a rhetoric denouncing the 'excesses' of the 1960s and promoting the 'silent majority.' What was efficient in 1968 proved to be an electoral failure in 2008. This paper explores the ways Republicans - including the maverick John McCain - have been trapped by ideology. The conclusion emphasizes the need for Republicans to avoid being captured by fringe elements within the party.
