520 _aTwo hypotheses are tested. On the one hand, the proximity of the EU institutions may foster direct interactions with citizens. On the other hand, the fact of living at the symbolic centre of the European system may reinforce individual identification with, and support for, the EU. A survey of a representative sample of Strasbourg citizens suggests a moderate effect of both factors (proximity and centre). However, this effect does not overcome the usual socio-economic and cultural gaps in socialization with respect to the EU.
