520 _aWith reference to the clinical situations presented at the last colloquium in Deauville, the ‘phobia of thought’ emerges as the avoidance of a traumatic representation that threatens the unity of the ego. It thus becomes linked to traumatic material that could not be elaborated retroactively into a structuring ‘trauma’. This poses the problem of transition from a functioning ‘beyond the pleasure principle’ to a functioning according to the pleasure principle. It is worked on by following the model of the transition from the traumatic dream to the punishment dream, using Freud’s suggested distinction between actuality-testing and reality-testing. In conclusion, the author explores the repercussions of these metapsychological reflections on the choice of the appropriate analytic situation: face-to-face, couch or group psychoanalytic treatment.
