This conflict, which concerned their theory of childhood trauma, was due to the fact that Ferenczi—confronted with countertransference difficulties encountered during the analytic work with some complex clinical circumstances—was suggesting that an analyst can truly adopt the position of a ‘tender mother’ towards his patient.
