520 _aDer Nebelspalter (The Cloudsplitter) is the oldest satirical magazine in the world, published in Switzerland, which has the largest number of satirical publications per capita. The central themes of the journal are on religious and political questions (Kulturkampf), constitutional and financial questions, as well as certain subjects essential to the political landscape of Switzerland, such as the Gothard tunnel. International subjects, present from the beginning, grew from the 1890’€™s thanks to the internationalization of the magazine, until then focused on the powerful Prussian and French neighbors with occasional appearances by Italy, the Austro-Hungarian empire, England and Russia. Colonial conflicts brought in countries from further away, while concerns about the Balkans led them to pose the European question with urgency. The Nebelspalter’€™s clear pro-germanic stance after 1916 brought it close to implosion.
