520 _aIn this article I explore textual and visual examples of the intercession of the Virgin in Les Miracles de Nostre Dame in order to emphasize the importance of the participation of the penitent in the path to salvation. The Throne of Solomon on the frontispiece in the ms. Paris, BnF, Naf. 24541 clearly illustrates this balance between the divine power of the Virgin and the participation of the penitent. This image could serve as a figure for the whole collection of miracles and the path to salvation for the individual. In Neoplatonic fashion, the steps of the stairway, like the miracles that will follow, constitute the stages of the path. In order to participate in the movement toward God that the Virgin’s statue promises, the penitent must climb these steps. This penitent, along with the readers and viewers of the manuscripts, shares the desire, expressed by Gautier near the end of the Miracles, for participacïon in the great house of God.
