520 _aGodefroy de Bouillon was one of the leading figures of the First Crusade. The Crusade Cycle puts him in the spotlight, giving him a wonderful ancestor and an illustrious lineage. The aim of this article is to study, using text and images, the character of Godefroy through a major heraldic element: the shield. This defensive item, which has its own language, follows the military leader from childhood to death, transforming itself at each stage to suit its bearer. From the lion and eagle of childhood, the dragon of the crusade, and the four dragons of Eastern royalty to the simplicity of the final texts, each emblem shows Godfrey de Bouillon as a military leader of great bravery and nobility.
