520 _aPierre de Wareix, a monk from the abbey of Gembloux, copied, in whole or in part, four manuscripts dealing mainly with canon law and, to a lesser extent, with theology, ascetic spirituality, and pastoral care. This learned monk undoubtedly came from the region of Gembloux, as his name suggests, as it is related to place names formed from “Waret”. The textual composition of his manuscripts, their colophons and some marginal notes indicate his presence at the University of Louvain in the years 1457–1470, as well as his active participation in the academic life, which perhaps led to a doctorate, a hypothesis that deserves further confirmation. His manuscripts and other contemporary codices from the Gembloux monastic library shed light on the role of the Brabantine abbey in the great intellectual and spiritual history of the Southern Low Countries in the second half of the fifteenth century.
