520 _aL’Éclaireur de l’Indre, created in September 1844 in order to “uplift public-mindedness in the provinces”, allowed George Sand to express herself polemically in a manner close to that of Claude Tillier, pamphleteer of the Nevers region and editor of two local Republican papers. Tillier’s polemics, as are Sand’s, are anchored in the period’s ideological and political debates and lead to a reflection concerning the possibility and the modalities of a polemical stance during the July monarchy. This paper has the purpose, in comparing their writing, of highlighting a little-known aspect of Sand’s work and of bringing Tillier’s to wider knowledge.
