520 _aFreedom can be grounded on a different level than that of things governed by causal necessity only if reference is made to the level of the soul. However, freedom is only possible if it is accompanied with multiple illusions. Love is however the act of the subject of the soul: it offers itself totally to the other by radically knocking down his foundation principle which is self-centeredness (the phenomenalization of everything on the self). Love is consequently situated within the sealed borders of the possibility of illusions which go along with freedom. Furthermore, love is always threatened by the hidden possibility of self-satisfaction (satisfying the other in order to satisfy oneself). However this double suspicion of illusion does not cancel out the possibility of love. Love, which is even more difficult than freedom, remains possible as that which is hidden if and only if it is hidden.
