520 | _aManipulation of sports competitions has become the new threat for professional sports organizations on a global scale. Still largely unknown by the general public, match fixing cases came to attention with the sports betting and Internet boom, a little under 10 years ago. Sport could not anticipate this swift development and has been confronted head-on by this new phenomenon. Today, organized crime uses sport and betting in a diversification strategy of its traditional activities like drug trafficking, racketeering and prostitution. There are some solutions but it is difficult to implement them in an international environment where tax havens and private interests often rule the world.
