520 _aThe correspondence of André Suarès is testimony to his attraction towards Jesus and Christianity, which took the form of a religious conviction that does not seem to have become a faith. After some biographical remarks, several series of correspondence are analysed, paying attention to the ambiguity of words. C. Péguy, A. Gide, R. Rolland, P. Claudel, F. Jammes, A. Bourdelle, J. Doucet, J. Paulhan, G. Rouault. Suarès is put off by those who would convert him, but touched by the humble Rouault whom he encourages in his art and his faith. His final piece of writing, The Paraclete, confirms this analysis.
