520 _aIt may well be high time to give up on the idea of certainty which, when we really think about it, reveals the absurdity of seeking it. At the very least, we must provide the reasons we have to suspect there is a mirage effect long since at work among those who pursue certainty. For people of knowledge or of faith, to the extent we are interested in what they do rather than what they say or what they say they do, we shall see that in real experience they never held absolute certainty as the supreme goal.
