520 _aMust we choose between the all-encompassing salvation discourse specific to religious traditions bearing hope through the open availability of time and the all-encompassing health discourse that disenchanted hopes by speaking of life expectancy? The conflict of interpretations that opposes the two tends, on the one hand, to reduce the stakes involved in health to technical and factual questions, thus confounding a materialism of method with a philosophical materialism. On the other hand, this conflict tends to portray the stakes involved in redemption as ethereal issues, as if they could not be sources of knowledge. Does not the way of approaching health and salvation together, by adhering closely to human existence within the limits imposed by the trial of vulnerability, encourage us to resist the temptation of too hastily giving meaning or of bringing back into a teleological perspective this trial of hardship born of the evil experienced, thus inviting us to espouse this distress?
