520 _aAlongside the current "metropolization" process taking place in the large Vietnamese cities, a movement of the population from the center towards the suburbs and a "gentrification" of the city center can be noticed. While the living environment is generally improved for these intra-urban migrants, the distances covered (for example from home to work or from home to school) are considerably higher. The lack of infrastructures is also desperately felt in the recently built peripheral zones. The role of living standards, measured by a "wealth index" is emphasized. Contrary to initial expectations, the rich tend to cover the longest distances which they can do thanks to the transportation means at their disposal. The fight against disparities in the city inevitably raises the issue of developing public transportation.
