520 _aOn the Reunion Island, family farming is a long-standing model. Promoted within the framework of land reform at the end of the 60s, it substituted itself to the agro-industrial model of declining sugar plantations. Contrary to the latter, the family farming model takes various forms depending on social and cultural origins, family composition, choices made regarding farms and land ownership. The various local configurations which stem from the reform testify to their significance for the development of the territory when they are considered interdependent.
