520 _aThe interesting thing about Leibniz’s mathematical work is that the countless working manuscripts in his archives in Hanover provide us with the material necessary to re-establish the various research paths and methods of discovery at the origin of his mathematical creations. As an example this article will tackle the notion of exponents, shedding useful light on the way Leibniz learned mathematics and gradually changed his attitude and manners. Thereby, during his first year in Paris, he focused on tabular relationships rather than forms and similarities. These epistemological issues explain the way Leibniz partially generalized the notion of the exponent.
